Weather Images: The Nor'easter of November 3, 2007

Hurricane Noel transitioned into a powerful extra-tropical storm on November 2, 2007, but still retained hurricane force winds as it passed to the east of Long Island on Saturday November 3, 2007. Strong winds occurred over the length of the island with gusts between 40 and 50 miles per hour common throughout Suffolk County. The highest winds exceeded 50 miles per hour in some locations on the east end. Rainfall varied widely from east to west ranging from little or no rain west of the Nassau/Suffolk county line to about a quarter of an inch over central Long Island with totals exceeding an inch on the east end. Late in the day some breaks in the clouds in the western sky provided for a spectacular sunset over central Long Island, although it was too little too late to take the chill out of a cold wet day.
The storm passed far enough to the east to spare Long Island its heaviest winds and rains. Several inches of rain fell over parts of southeastern Massachusetts and winds on Nantucket and Cape Cod gusted to hurricane force in spots. A wind gust over 90 miles per hour was reported from an elevated platform offshore near the cape.
The photos below were taken late in the day on November 3 as the storm was pulling away from Long Island. Click any of the photos to see a larger version.
